Childers Park
Childers Park, named for William R. Childers, Jr., is a 17 acre passive park in the heart of Monroe, two blocks west of the Walton County historic courthouse. In 2009, Friends of Walton County, a private non-profit organization, in partnership with the City of Monroe, began working to turn the property from an overgrown kudzu hill into a functioning park with almost a mile of walking trails, a dog park, and natural play elements for children that include hillside slides. Every holiday season the park is filled with walking light displays, also known as our Bikes, Trikes, and Magical Lights Parade on opening night, for the community to enjoy.
The site of the park holds a special place in the history of Monroe as it was the original Monroe High School football stadium. Many longtime residents have enjoyed walking the trails at the park and remembering time spent there in high school.
The park also features unique public art, eagle scout projects, decorative retention pond with fountain, and numerous plantings from local garden clubs. The City of Monroe has placed older recycled fire hydrants that are no longer being used into the park in the wooded area near the dog park. Volunteers from the community have helped paint those hydrants over the years. The dog park is also home to a bench named for the late Gunnar Winston Samuelson, who was an avid dog lover in the community.
