Parks & Recreation
The Parks division is responsible for the upkeep, maintenance, and growth of City owned parks and similar facilities. The parks system will see positive advancements with changes in current agreements and the recent SPLOST vote. The Parks division will see more activity 2020 as funding becomes available. Childers Park and Pocket Park were the only parks maintained and controlled by the City of Monroe for the past 20 plus years, with additional parks being the responsibility of Walton County. In January of 2020, the City of Monroe took back control and maintenance of all City owned parks, and will be bringing those parks up to a more desirable condition during the year. The Planning & Development department will be responsible for the overall planning and design of the parks system throughout the City, while the Central Services department will maintain the overall operational and maintenance responsibility for the parks system.
Over the past few years, Childers Park has received many additions and upgrades to include the removal and mulching of trees on the western most part of the park, the upgrade of the Dog Park in that same area, the addition of a water fountain for both people and pets, the replacement of hand painted hydrants for decoration, and the continued improvement of entrance points from Washington & McDaniel Streets. The coming year should see the planned additions of a dueling slide system on the large hill facing West Spring Street, a natural seating setup using trees from the park that were taken down, the reworking of the West Spring Street street side landscaping, and other equipment to add to the overall usability of the park for all citizens.
Currently, no park area rentals are being accepted by the City until a full evaluation of the conditions, along with repairs are made for the safety of those visiting!
All pavilions are first come, first serve at this time.
This page will provide updates as to the plans and operations going on at different parks owned and operated by the City.
